Abstract
Ongoing industry and scientific research is exploring the feasibility of using real-time braking efficiency data from landing aircraft to determine runway friction coefficients. This approach could enhance situational awareness for other runway users, air traffic control, and airport authorities. However, IFALPA emphasizes that such systems must be safely integrated into normal operations by satisfying a few preconditions, ensuring that flight crews are fully informed about the system’s function, operational impact, and how the data will be used. When properly implemented, aircraft-based friction measurement can serve as a valuable safety enhancement.
