Runway Safety Team

Runway safety is a shared responsibility that depends on effective coordination between all actors operating in the airport environment. This course provides a comprehensive overview of runway safety from a system-wide perspective, focusing on how Runway Safety Teams bring together operational expertise, data, and collaborative decision-making.

Participants will explore how different stakeholders contribute to identifying hazards, analyzing risks, and implementing mitigation strategies. The course emphasizes practical tools, structured processes, and the importance of communication, feedback loops, and safety culture in achieving sustainable improvements. This training is designed for a wide range of aviation professionals, including airport operators, air traffic services, airlines, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in runway operations.

Why it matters

Runway environments are among the most complex and high-risk areas of flight operations, involving continuous interaction between aircraft, air traffic control, and ground services. With increasing traffic density and operational pressure in many regions, the risk of runway-related events remains a significant safety concern.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will be able to recognize and prioritize runway safety risks and understand the factors that contribute to them, including human performance, communication challenges, operational pressures, and environmental influences.

Participants will gain insight into runway incursion and excursion prevention strategies, as well as the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders involved in maintaining runway safety.

They will also be able to apply practical risk mitigation principles, contribute effectively to Runway Safety Team activities, and support continuous improvement in runway safety performance.
