Negotiations Seminar
The IFALPA Negotiation Skills Seminar is a three-day intensive, practical training program designed to prepare pilot representatives for the realities of collective bargaining in the aviation industry. Combining negotiation theory with realistic, high-pressure simulations, the seminar gives participants the opportunity to develop and apply strategic bargaining skills in a dynamic labour relations environment.
Through interactive discussions, case studies, and a live strike-deadline simulation, participants learn how to build consensus, manage expectations, analyze financial information, and maintain discipline at the bargaining table. The seminar is tailored for both newly elected and experienced pilot representatives seeking to strengthen their effectiveness in negotiations and union leadership roles.
Why it matters
Collective bargaining plays a critical role in protecting professional standards, working conditions, and long-term career sustainability within aviation. Negotiations are not simply discussions about wages and benefits, they are structured processes that address work rules, scheduling, job security, and operational quality of life.
In today’s aviation environment, pilot representatives must navigate increasingly complex negotiations shaped by economic pressures, operational restructuring, financial analysis, and evolving stakeholder expectations. Effective negotiators must balance strategic planning, committee unity, and member engagement while operating under significant time pressure and organizational scrutiny.
This seminar helps participants understand negotiation as a “power process” that balances the relationship between employees and corporations. By developing practical bargaining skills and learning to manage the psychological dynamics of negotiations, participants become better equipped to advocate effectively for their membership and achieve sustainable agreements.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the IFALPA Negotiation Skills Seminar, participants will be able to:
