General Information

The IFALPA Positive Safety Culture Course is intended for all parties involved in the development and implementation of a positive safety culture. The course builds on safety management fundamentals to understand the benefits and practical methods to implement or improve a Positive Safety Culture, developing the Safety Management System beyond the basic regulatory framework.

Participation in the course is suited to:

  • Pilot members of an IFALPA Member Association (MA) intending to be a “Positive Safety Culture champion” of their MA.
  • Pilot representatives participating in their operator’s Safety Action Group (SAG) or safety committee.
  • Other SAG participants, such as: Safety Managers, and Regulatory personnel involved in the oversight of safety management on behalf of Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs).

Course Facilitators will lead course participants through the core principles of safety culture, how safety culture can be changed, best practice to create a positive safety culture, and how to measure safety culture. Participants will be guided through real world examples to enforce the concepts and relate them to aviation. This will enable the participants to influence and support the positive safety culture for the organizations where they work.

The course involves two days of instruction and discussions of Positive Safety Culture which culminate in simulated practical exercises.

Course Fee: $550 CAD, includes coffee breaks.

Course Details

IFALPA Positive Safety Culture Course participants will become familiar with the theory of positive safety culture and fundamentals for applying it in their operations.

The course places emphasis on the practical application of the concepts and will encourage participants to become Positive Safety Culture champions for their associations or organizations.

About the Instructors

Capt. Helena Cunningham

Captain Helena (Reidemar) Cunningham is the IFALPA Safety Management Working Group Chairperson and Central Air Safety Chair for Delta ALPA. She was the Director of SMS for five years, prior to that she held the position of Director of Human Factors for six years in the ALPA Air Safety Organization. She was appointed as IFALPA Safety Management Working Group Chair in 2021 and in that capacity her group serves as an advisor to the ICAO SMP Annex 19.

She is currently a Captain of the Boeing 767-400 at Delta Air Lines. Before that, she was a 717 Captain and previously a DC-9 First Officer instructor for 10 years. She has participated in human factors specific industry and academic research and has been published in numerous journals and books over the past 20+ years. She served as a CIRP coordinator for 5 years and Human Factors Subcommittee chair for nearly 20 years at Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines ALPA.

Captain Cunningham earned a BS in aviation management from Southern Illinois University; dual specialization (safety & operations) MAS in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University–Daytona Beach; and a PhD ABD in safety engineering. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis graduate human factors certificate program and has been teaching for over eight years at three universities.

Co-chair of A Practical Guide for Effective Pilot Monitoring working group with deliverable document published by the Flight Safety Foundation in 2014. She was elected Fellow at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London in 2014. She received the 2014 Air Safety Award from the Air Line Pilots Association, International.

 

Capt. Lucy Evans

Captain Lucy Evans holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Aviation, is a fixed wing and rotorcraft pilot and currently serves as the Chair of the SMS subcommittee for the Delta Air Lines MEC. She is currently a Captain on the 737 and holds type ratings on Boeing, Airbus, Gulfstream, Bombardier, and Dassault aircraft. Captain Evans has previously held positions as an International Large Cabin private jet Captain, developed SMS programs through numerous safety and leadership positions and has also functioned as a simulator instructor/evaluator for a variety of approved domestic and foreign training programs.

The cost of personal travel, accommodations, and additional meals are not included and are the responsibility of individual attendees.
