As an International Organisation IFALPA's principal task is to deal with matters which affect international civil aviation.

Matters, that only affect the domestic business of a Pilots Association are not generally dealt with by IFALPA, although the Federation's policies may contain advice and assistance on such domestic matters.

The Federation does not normally communicate directly with organizations which have solely a national responsibility - that is the right of the Member Association in the country concerned. However , there are some exceptions  to this rule. These occur mainly where the national organization concerned  has some responsibility  for an International activity with which IFALPA is also involved.

Under these circumstances great care is taken  to ensure that the appropriate  Member Association is kept fully aware of what IFALPA  is saying to its authorities on behalf of the international pilot community.

It is worth noting , however , that because the majority of States are members of ICAO, membership of IFALPA gives  a Pilots' Association an additional opportunity to influence its own  government's actions. The   Associations  can influence what  IFALPA says to ICAO, and hence what ICAO says to its member states.

The Federation is invited regularly to be represented at a wide range of meetings of other international and regional organizations in addition to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) the following organizations represent a typical example of the depth of IFALPA involvement in the international arena.
