Setting Up and Leading a Technical and Safety Committee (TASC)2 Day Course, Date of next course TBAMost members associations (MAs) are small or medium sized. This means that they have limited financial and human resources. There is a temptation to try to mimic the technical and flight safety structure of the large MAs or only to focus on a few areas. This course offers guidance on how to use those resources more effectively to organise and run a flight safety/technical committee. It provides practical workable models based on those used in other MAs. It provides specific guidance on where and how to participate with the airlines, the authorities and the membership and how to interact with the MA’s board. It gives the participants a briefing on the current key technical and safety issues affecting IFALPA and its Member Associations. It covers the essential points in developing and implementing an accident preparedness plan. Finally, it provides leadership training for those that chair or one day may chair a MA’s Technical and Safety Committee (or indeed an IFALPA Technical Specialist Committee) and shows how to run effective meetings. The concluding Committee exercise combines all of this knowledge and skill set. It can also be viewed as Safety School 2, as it follows on from the IFALPA Safety School and is the “techies” equivalent of the ALERT course. Leadership and Team BuildingEquip the committee chairman to lead the technical and safety representatives on their committee, whilst others learn how to be effective team players. Effective MeetingsToo many times, busy representatives attend meetings in which there has been a lack of preparation and where the chair is ineffective. This module helps all of us to understand how to better prepare for meetings, how to participate in them and how to chair them. Communication and MediaCommunication and Media factors in aviation safety and professional affairs expose the representative to the potential effectiveness and the pitfalls of communication through the written and electronic media. This module gives an insight in to internal and external communications. It also explains the principles of dealing with the media and how to use it as a tool to move forward toward the goals of the Association, but emphases the need to receive further training before actually dealing with the media. Introduction to Negotiating SkillsWhilst not intending to teach Committee members how to negotiate (which is covered by a separate three day seminar), it is important that they understand the process and realise that negotiating skills are as important in the technical and safety arena, as they are when dealing with professional affairs. Accident PreparednessIt is essential that every Member Association has an accident preparedness plan in place before any serious incident or accident occurs to its members anywhere in the networks flown by its pilots or to assist pilots of another Member Association should an accident occur within the first MA’s country. Hot TopicsThere are always a number of key issues affecting IFALPA and its Member Associations. This module gives an overview of the current “Hot Topics” with particular reference to those concerned with technical and safety Committee ExerciseAs part of the TASC course, each participant will be assigned to a Technical and Safety Committee with a designated chair. Each Committee member will be given the task of individually preparing a brief on an issue based on a relevant “hot topic”. The members will then each brief the Committee on their respective issues, which will be discussed and given a priority as agreed by the Committee as a whole. This will require both a technical knowledge and the ability to be a proactive member of a TASC. Pre-requisites
